As credit fraud becomes more of a problem for all consumers, a national organization recently announced that it is creating a task force to deal with identity theft.

In October, the National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA) launched its Identity Theft Task Force to help research and counteract the crime. The goal of the task force will be to develop a set of criteria to guide agencies when helping victims of identity theft. The task force will also develop educational programs for consumers.

NOVA's task force will bring together representatives from a number of different organizations that deal with identity theft. It will be chaired by Chief Justice Richard Barajas, a retired judge from the Texas Court of Appeals.

"We believe that this is a critical time to form this task force as the reported cases of identity theft continue to rise across the United States," says Will Marling, executive director of NOVA.

The formation of the task force coincided with National Cyber Security Awareness Month. According to the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, more than 339 million private records have been involved in data breaches since 2005.
